Chinese Women Make History with Fields Medal Wins
Wang Hong has become the first Chinese woman to be awarded the Fields Medal, one of the most prestigious honors in mathematics. Her achievement marks a milestone, being only the third time in the 90-year history of the award that a woman has won. This recognition highlights the growing diversity in a field traditionally dominated by men.
Fields Medals, often likened to the Nobel Prize for mathematics, are presented every four years to between two and four mathematicians under the age of 40. Their purpose is to acknowledge outstanding achievements and the potential for future work.
This year, Chinese mathematicians Hong Wang and Yu Deng made headlines by winning the medal at the same ceremony. The awards were announced during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Wang and Deng, along with American John Pardon and Canadian Jacob Tsimerman, were recognized for their significant contributions to mathematics.
Ulrike Tillmann, vice-president and incoming president of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), praised the winners. She noted the importance of women being recognized at high levels, stating, “We should have the feeling that it has become a normal thing that women contribute to their fields at the highest level, including the Fields Medal.”

Originally from Guilin, China, Wang’s journey in mathematics began with a moment of clarity as a child when solving her first math problem. Her research led her to solve a longstanding issue known as the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions, alongside Joshua Zahl from the University of British Columbia. Her work has opened new possibilities in harmonic analysis and other mathematical fields.
Yu Deng, hailing from Shenzhen, China, was celebrated for his innovative research in axiomatizing physics, helping establish foundational mathematical principles for understanding various sciences. His collaboration with Zaher Hani and Xiao Ma has further propelled his reputation.
These achievements are particularly noteworthy as they signify the first instance of two Chinese scholars winning the Fields Medal simultaneously. Previous recipients of Chinese descent include Yau Shing-Tung in 1982 and Terence Tao in 2006.
John Pardon of the U.S. was recognized for his work in topology and geometry, while Jacob Tsimerman from Canada extended mathematical frameworks into algebraic geometry.
Within China, the reactions on social media were filled with pride and reflection. Many users celebrated the advancements and expressed admiration for Wang and Deng’s achievements. However, some discussions also questioned why many Chinese researchers pursue training and careers abroad, considering the impact of China’s growing academic collaborations internationally.
The IMU also honored other mathematicians with top awards. Oxford University’s Graeme Segal received the Chern Medal, and the University of Washington’s Shayan Oveis Gharan was awarded the Abacus Medal. Fields Medalists receive a gold medal with an engraving of Archimedes and a cash prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars (approximately $11,000 USD).
Despite the accolades and rewards, for Yu Deng, the driving force remains curiosity. He expressed a desire to solve complex questions within the physical universe, highlighting the joy and satisfaction derived from successful problem-solving.
