House Approves Resolution to Withdraw U.S. Forces from Iran Hostilities

The House of Representatives approved a resolution on Thursday to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran. This decision mirrors the increasing frustration within Congress over war oversight. The resolution passed with a close vote of 214 to 208.

Though not legally binding, the resolution serves as a symbolic criticism of President Trump for engaging in a war that Congress never authorized. This marks the second time the House has expressed disapproval since the conflict began.

After the House voted, Senate Democrats attempted to advance a similar war powers resolution. However, the measure was narrowly defeated, with a vote of 47 to 49.

These legislative actions occur amid escalating attacks between Iran and the U.S. Eighteen U.S. troops have died in the conflict since February, with four casualties since July 17. The Pentagon reports nearly 500 U.S. service members injured, with 100 injuries in the last two weeks alone.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., who spearheaded the resolution in the House, emphasized that the vote communicates Congress’s dissatisfaction with what she terms an “illegal war.” She noted, “From the start, this war has lacked a clear mission, strategy, and end goal. Congress has been left out of the decision-making process.” Jayapal highlighted the president’s initial election promise to end long-lasting wars.

Support for the legislative effort was bipartisan, with Republicans Tom Barrett (MI), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Warren Davidson (OH), and Thomas Massie (KY) siding with Democrats.

Opponents of the resolution argue that military action is necessary due to Iran’s past attacks on Americans and U.S. interests. During the House debate, Rep. Brian Mast of Florida, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, displayed photos of U.S. service members killed in the conflict. “To belittle this mission is to belittle the service these members gave their life for,” Mast stated. He argued that the military operation addresses numerous attacks by Iran on Americans.

In recent Senate actions, a war powers resolution was initially approved but later reversed when President Trump criticized the decision. The president dismissed the war power votes as “meaningless” and attributed them to opposition from Democrats driven by personal animosity toward him.
