MS NOW host Jen Psaki expressed concern about the Democratic Party’s difficulty in gaining media traction, questioning if the emphasis on former President Donald Trump might be a factor. Psaki discussed this with former ABC News journalist Terry Moran, who noted that Democrats were not leading as expected ahead of the midterm elections, despite Trump’s low approval ratings.
Psaki remarked that while enthusiasm among Democrats was high, the party struggled to present more than an anti-Trump stance. She stated, “It has taken time for leading Democratic voices to shift from being solely anti-Trump to offering concrete proposals.” She pointed out the difficulty in communicating their plans for additional health care benefits for children under six and pre-K assistance.
“I would also say, to take a little bit of the blame off of leading Democrats, it’s very hard to break through with that stuff,” Psaki mentioned, acknowledging her role and the role of platforms in this challenge. She admitted it was challenging to decide on guests for her show outside of Trump-centered news.
Psaki suggested that the public was not adequately informed about Democratic plans to improve lives, highlighting that the focus remains heavily on Trump. Moran agreed, questioning how journalists should navigate this landscape.
“Trump creates chaos and dominates the media consistently,” Moran said. “This leaves journalists with a dilemma: cover Trump’s actions or focus on broader issues?”
Earlier in April, Psaki told Stephen A. Smith about the disproportionate attention given to the idea of using the 25th Amendment against Trump, something she viewed as unconstructive. Psaki commented, “Why spend so much time on something unlikely to happen?”
Hanna Panreck, an associate editor at Fox News, reported on Psaki’s insights.
