Formula 1 Considers Sepang Circuit Return Amid Middle East Calendar Shake-Up

The Middle East crisis has forced Formula 1 to drop two races from the early season, potentially opening the door for a former favorite to return. Recent reports suggest that Malaysia’s Sepang Circuit might fill a gap if the Bahrain Grand Prix cannot be rescheduled.

The Bahrain Grand Prix, along with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, was initially set for April. However, escalating tensions removed them from the schedule, leading to a month with no races. Although the Saudi Arabian race on the Jeddah Corniche Circuit is off the calendar this year, F1 aims to reschedule Bahrain for the weekend of October 4.

Given the uncertainty over the season’s final two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, Sepang is a potential alternative. Its location is convenient, as the following race after October 4 happens in Singapore.

Sepang was a fan and driver favorite, known for its intense conditions. It hosted races from 1999 to 2017. Its return would undoubtedly excite fans eager for a surprise addition to the calendar.

The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council will discuss this and other matters during their meeting this weekend. The broader impact of the regional conflict extends beyond F1. The World Endurance Championship also canceled a Qatar race and faces uncertainty regarding its Bahrain finale in November.
