A recent Pew Research Center poll indicates a shift among some Republicans regarding President Donald Trump’s economic policies. Trump, who campaigned on reducing costs during high inflation following the COVID-19 pandemic, won key swing states in 2024 against former Vice President Kamala Harris. However, over a year into his second term, many Americans remain dissatisfied with economic conditions.
Economists point to certain policies, such as tariffs and involvement in the Iran conflict, as factors pressuring the economy. Gasoline prices have surged due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil passageway, following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in February. As of Thursday, the national average for gas prices was $4.091, according to AAA.
The Pew poll shows an increase in Republican voters who believe Trump’s policies have worsened the economy, though a significant conservative base still supports him. Ahead of the midterms, Democrats are focusing on economic issues as polls highlight the economy as a top voter concern.
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers asserted Trump’s commitment to enhancing American energy production and reducing costs for families. Meanwhile, Newsweek sought a White House comment via email.
Republican Concerns Grow
The Pew poll revealed that 28% of Republican voters view Trump’s economic policies as detrimental, up from 18% in 2025 and 2026. Overall, 60% of respondents attributed worsening economic conditions to these policies. Only 24% of voters, including 10% of Democrats and 41% of Republicans, described the economy as ‘excellent’ or ‘good.’ The last majority of positive economic sentiment was reported in early 2020, before pandemic-triggered economic challenges.
Additionally, 19% of Republicans expect economic deterioration within a year, up from 14% recorded earlier. Yet, support for Trump remains firm among Republicans, with 69% approving his performance and a +54 net approval among conservative Republicans.
Economic Focus in Midterms
The economy is anticipated to play a significant role in the forthcoming elections. An Economist and YouGov poll indicated inflation and pricing as key issues for 32% of Americans, while jobs and the overall economy concerned 14%, and 10% were focused on healthcare. The poll showed only 21% ranked the economy as ‘excellent’ or ‘good,’ with 75% viewing conditions as ‘fair’ or ‘poor.’ Conducted from July 17-20, the poll surveyed 1,602 adults with a 3.3-point margin of error.
Democratic candidates like Roy Cooper, running for Senate, are addressing economic struggles such as rising grocery prices and healthcare billing. The White House has touted economic successes, highlighting a recent tax season where average refunds surpassed $3,400, amounting to over $82 billion in tax relief and 97% of filers receiving cuts.
A Fox News poll shows Democrats leading Republicans in economic trust, with a 54% to 45% advantage. This margin is their widest since 2006.
New Tariff Policy
Trump’s administration announced new tariffs, including 50% on Canadian imports and 25% on other goods. These tariffs, central to Trump’s economic strategy, aim to boost domestic manufacturing and close trade deficits. Critics argue such measures could inflate consumer prices in the U.S.
Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated additional tariffs target 60 countries over forced labor concerns, reaffirming America’s commitment to enforcing labor standards.
Trump’s Approval Trends
Recent polls indicate a decline in Trump’s approval ratings since his return to the presidency. This article highlights polling data reflecting current voter sentiments.
