At the start of the year, the anticipation of summer filled my thoughts. Just after turning 18, I looked forward to graduating high school and creating memorable experiences with friends. It was a time of excitement and pride as I aimed to get through the first half of the year to begin the celebrations. I maintained focus on my senior year, adhering to routines, despite noticing some unusual symptoms.
In early 2026, I noticed large bruises on my legs. Playing tennis, it was easy to attribute these to accidental hits with the racket. Ignoring the bruising was easier than dealing with my extremely itchy skin. Scratching led to bleeding and scars on my legs and feet. As months passed, I experienced night sweats, persistent coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Speaking a full sentence without a coughing break became a challenge. Despite the symptoms, I tried to remain positive and look forward.
As the end of my senior year approached, I longed to enjoy it, but constant exhaustion and lack of motivation drained my energy. I lacked the vitality typical for someone my age. In spring, I visited the doctor for my lingering cough, suspecting seasonal asthma. An inhaler was prescribed but didn’t help. Returning three weeks later, I shared concerns about bruising and itchy skin, realizing it might not be allergies. The doctor suggested a chest X-ray, and soon after, called me back for further tests.
The follow-up involved a CT scan which revealed an eight-centimeter mass on my lung and swollen lymph nodes in my neck. Blood tests confirmed a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma stage 2 on April 23, 2026. It was a profound shock, having always been healthy, to face something this serious.
‘I Never Imagined This Would Be My Reality’
I never anticipated this life, not at 18. The rapid arrival of overwhelming fear and questions was hard to manage. An alternative diagnosis, like a lung infection, seemed less daunting, but it wasn’t so.
Currently, I am undergoing chemotherapy with Nivolumab AVD. Each session, lasting four to six hours, takes place every two weeks. I have completed five of twelve treatments, with the sixth ongoing. Varied recovery days follow each session, marked by extreme fatigue and nausea, keeping me bedridden for days.
Cancer and chemotherapy impact every aspect of my life. Physical exhaustion, nausea, infections, and hair loss present daily hurdles. Emotionally, it’s devastating to transition from a healthy teenager to one battling cancer. Returning to who I was seems impossible.
I wanted to make summer memories but spent most days at the cancer center. Sometimes, it feels like my friends have moved on without me. However, cancer taught me the importance of a positive mindset. Despite challenges, it fostered resilience, appreciation for supportive people, and a renewed value for small joys.
‘If Something Feels Off, Don’t Ignore It’
In my ongoing journey, I stress that understanding others’ experiences is crucial, as cancer and illness are not always visible. Trust your body’s signals. If something feels wrong, seek medical insight.
Cancer unexpectedly highlighted the value of genuine friendships. Trying times reveal true support. Reach out to struggling friends; a simple message can mean immensely. A small gesture can be significant.
Following my diagnosis, I shared my journey on TikTok to illustrate that life, even with cancer, can harbor joy. Helping one person feel less isolated or encouraging proactive health checks makes this path worthwhile.
