Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s Senate campaign has sparked a debate over its expenditure on private security. Records indicate the campaign spent over $250,000, providing Republicans with a new point of criticism. Federal Election Commission data reveals $277,312.28 was spent on security services during the 2026 election cycle. The funds were allocated to Foresight Solutions and Frontpoint.

Security Expenditure

Foresight Solutions offers services such as security assessments, workplace safety training, and conflict resolution. Frontpoint provides home-security systems focused on safeguarding families. The spending comes amid Republican critiques of Cooper’s stance on policing, criminal justice reform, and other related issues during his tenure as governor.

Republican Criticism

Republicans have linked these expenditures to broader criticisms of Cooper’s governance. They point to his record on issues such as COVID-19-era inmate releases and his cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Republican strategist Mark Bednar described the situation as “blatant hypocrisy,” criticizing Cooper for prioritizing personal security while allegedly weakening community safety.

“The issue for voters is not whether Cooper needs security, but his policy choices that compromise public safety,” Bednar stated. He referenced incidents like the killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, suggesting these highlight a lenient attitude towards crime.

Cooper’s Defense

Cooper’s campaign has defended his public-safety achievements. A spokesperson cited Cooper’s efforts in law enforcement and crime legislation, emphasizing his history in keeping violent offenders off the streets. The campaign accused Republican opponent Michael Whatley of hypocrisy, pointing to his controversial appointments within the North Carolina Republican Party.

The spokesperson referenced Cooper’s legislative record, which includes enhancing judges’ powers to detain violent offenders and supporting law enforcement enhancements. They also defended the former governor’s actions during the pandemic, arguing Republicans have mischaracterized his efforts regarding inmate releases.

Republican Response

In response, a spokesperson for Whatley criticized Cooper, accusing him of mismanaging various challenges during his governance. They claimed, “Cooper has blood on his hands,” due to his choices related to criminal releases.
