The Illharmonic Orchestra: Bridging Hip-Hop and Classical Music
The Illharmonic Orchestra combines hip-hop with classical music to create a unique community experience. Led by Jeffrey McNeill, known as ‘Thee Phantom’, and Andrea Coln McNeill, ‘The Phoenix’, the group performs across the United States, using music to bridge cultural gaps.
Jeffrey McNeill’s journey began in 1987 when he noticed the connections between these two genres. His early exposure to music included flute and piano lessons. His father introduced him to The Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’. His brother’s discovery of the Beastie Boys’ ‘Paul Revere’ resonated with elements of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
The Illharmonic Orchestra showcases this fusion of genres with live performances incorporating hip-hop, R&B, and classical instruments. The ensemble consists of all-Black musicians, highlighting diversity in a field that often lacks representation. Andrea Coln McNeill emphasized the importance of showing that these genres are not as distinct as they might appear. She explained how individuals with diverse backgrounds have the training, whether through conservatories or self-teaching, to perform at high levels.
McNeill describes their concerts as a blend of a house party and a concert hall. The audience participates actively, connecting with the music and performers. This connection with the audience fuels their passion and keeps the group thriving.
