A panel from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with connections to the industry has suggested reducing regulatory controls on six peptides. This decision comes amid objections from FDA scientists concerned about insufficient data. Despite peptides being promoted for benefits such as faster healing, improved skin appearance, and extended lifespan, solid evidence backing their efficacy and safety is scarce.
An advisory committee of the FDA recommended on Friday the compounding of two additional peptides lacking proven benefits. This decision concluded a two-day meeting that sparked debate over whether the agency is compromising safety measures intended to prevent untested drugs from reaching patients.
