Vegas Golden Knights Move On from Coach John Tortorella After Cup Final

When a coach guides a team to the Stanley Cup Final, the expectation is often their return for the next season. However, this was not the case for former Vegas Golden Knights coach, John Tortorella. Despite his impactful but brief leadership, taking over with only eight games left in the regular season, Tortorella led the team to its third Stanley Cup Final in nine years.

After losing Game 6 to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Golden Knights quickly announced Tortorella’s departure. Ryan Craig, who previously coached Vegas’ AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights, would step into the role. In an interview with The Athletic, Tortorella expressed his feelings on the decision. “I guess the word I’d use is ‘disappointed,’” he said, describing the meeting with General Manager Kelly McCrimmon. Tortorella explained that McCrimmon was straightforward, informing him immediately about Craig’s appointment for the next season. “We had an honest conversation,” he added, respecting the organization’s direction.

Tortorella wanted more time with the team to “finish the job.” Yet, the decision rested with the general manager and president. He acknowledged the team’s choice and prepared to move forward.

Tortorella’s tenure, though short, was marked by the Golden Knights’ spirited run to the Final. The franchise, known for its bold moves, reflects the gamble-happy nature of its Las Vegas base. Although Craig was long seen as the eventual successor, Tortorella’s past success, including a Stanley Cup win, highlighted the surprising nature of the change.

The Golden Knights’ recent Cup Final ended with a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes after six games. While the team’s previous decision to replace Bruce Cassidy with Tortorella paid off, the focus now shifts to Craig’s leadership. If the team stumbles early next season, the front office might face scrutiny.
