Trump Requires Saudi Arabia to Join Abraham Accords for Nuclear Deal
President Donald Trump stated on Friday that Saudi Arabia must become part of the Abraham Accords before the United States can advance with a civilian nuclear agreement. During negotiations, this prerequisite was always understood, according to Trump.
When inquired about what seemed like a new stipulation following Energy Secretary Chris Wright’s announcement of progress on a Saudi nuclear deal, Trump dismissed any notion of premature action.
“No, nobody got out ahead,” Trump clarified. “In order to proceed, they must join the Abraham Accords, which have proven highly effective. Now is the time for them to do it.”
In the Oval Office of the White House, Trump emphasized the essential role of nuclear reactors for data centers and economic enhancement.
Later, Trump confirmed the requirement was never unclear, despite not discussing it directly.
“Well, it was always understood,” Trump reiterated. “Chris knew and Saudi Arabia knew joining the Abraham Accords was necessary for the deal.”
When questioned about Wright’s signing of the agreement, Trump stressed any deal must be sanctioned by Congress and contingent on Saudi Arabia’s inclusion in the accords.
“They understood, subject to Congress and other factors, the necessity of signing the Abraham Accords,” Trump stated. “We believe these accords bring peace to the Middle East.”
Trump argued that Iran’s military capacity had diminished, altering the region’s security dynamics.
“The Iran threat is no longer significant,” Trump remarked. “Their capabilities have lessened substantially.”
He highlighted the focus on civilian nuclear energy in any agreement with Saudi Arabia.
“They’ll join and handle their civil nuclear energy,” Trump said. “It’s purely civilian nuclear, without enrichment.”
These comments were made at an Oval Office event celebrating progress in nuclear energy, with four reactor companies achieving Trump’s goals for new reactor designs by July Fourth. Trump hailed the occasion as a “historic milestone for civilian nuclear energy” and a “nuclear power renaissance in America.”
