Democrats Call for Accountability in New Jersey Voter Registration Error

Democratic lawmakers have expressed agreement that New Jersey’s recent voter registration error requires accountability, though they refute claims of widespread election fraud. A software error resulted in roughly 6,600 noncitizens being mistakenly registered through New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System.

Investigation and Remedial Actions

Governor Mikie Sherrill noted that an immediate investigation was ordered upon discovering the error. The state’s Division of Elections is now working to remove ineligible voters from the rolls. According to Sherrill, fewer than 400 of the mistakenly registered individuals cast ballots.

Improving Election Processes

Senator Andy Kim emphasized the importance of giving states the tools needed to maintain accurate voter rolls. He expressed skepticism about relying solely on Department of Homeland Security databases to ensure election integrity. State Requirements and Evaluation

Senator Tim Kaine highlighted Virginia’s voter ID requirements and election audits, noting they have not revealed any instances of noncitizen voting. He criticized the New Jersey error as unacceptable, emphasizing the need for robust systems to prevent such occurrences.
