Chicago’s Enthusiasm for Women’s Basketball and the Challenges Facing the Sky

Hosting the WNBA All-Star Game once again highlighted Chicago’s deep appreciation for women’s basketball. The event was successful for the WNBA and the city, with predictions of a sellout at the United Center exceeding 20,000 attendees. The city’s commitment to women’s sports is further underscored by the presence of three dedicated sports bars: Whiskey Girl Tavern, Babe’s Sports Bar, and Level Sporting Club, which hosted parties with partners like Nike.

Chicago hosted the All-Star Game in 2022 during the initial stages of a WNBA popularity surge, leading to smaller events at Wintrust Arena. Kahleah Copper recalled relaxing days back then, contrasting with this year’s packed schedule of parties and panels.

Notable figures such as Barack Obama, Dwyane Wade, and Jayson Tatum attended the festivities. Yet, the Chicago Sky’s absence was notable. The Sky failed to have any player at official WNBA events due to their persistent injury woes. Despite being the host, the Sky could not participate in the Shooting Stars event after declining the league’s offer.

The Sky face issues including the sidelining of Rickea Jackson due to an ACL injury. These challenges resulted in the Sky not having an All-Star, which has not happened since 2016. For a team historically tied to stars like Candice Dupree and Elena Delle Donne, the absence is profound.

The WNBA’s growth has increased competition for All-Star spots, highlighting the Sky’s decline as they trend toward missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season. They have previously survived struggles, like their poor beginnings in 2006 and rebounding to win a championship in 2021.

Success in the WNBA requires securing a star; yet, the Sky currently lack one and a path forward. While Chicago revels in the success of the All-Star weekend, the Sky must refocus their priorities. Hosting future events should include active participation from the team, avoiding being sidelined again.
