Sylvester Stallone’s legendary “Rocky” story will be retold in Peter Farrelly’s biographical drama, “I Play Rocky.” The film revisits how “Rocky” became a cultural phenomenon, starting with Stallone insisting on starring in the film based on his screenplay.
The Unyielding Stand
The “I Play Rocky” trailer reveals Stallone, portrayed by Anthony Ippolito, presenting his script to producers. Despite lucrative offers, Stallone refused to sell the screenplay unless he was cast as the lead role. This decision, reported by experts as unprecedented at the time, marked Stallone’s unwavering belief in his story and his performance.
The Risks and Rewards
Entertainment attorney Tisha Morris noted that Stallone’s stance was extraordinarily rare, as most new writers would typically accept the money and relinquish casting control. Stallone held the legal rights to the script, allowing him to impose this condition. Film historian Dwight Cleveland highlighted that Stallone’s confidence mirrored his iconic character — believing in the script’s potential to propel his career.
Marc Simon, an entertainment attorney, referred to Stallone’s decision as an exemplary case of standing by principles over immediate financial gain. Although unproven in the industry, Stallone rejected offers up to $360,000, equivalent to over $2 million today, in favor of a role he felt destined to play.
Producers Meet Stallone’s Demands
Ultimately, producers agreed to Stallone’s terms. He accepted a significant pay cut, minimizing financial risks. “Rocky” was produced on a modest budget of approximately $1 million. Its success surprised many when it became a major hit, securing ten Academy Award nominations and winning three Oscars, including Best Picture in 1976.
A Lasting Legacy
“Rocky” launched one of Hollywood’s most successful franchises and solidified Rocky Balboa as an iconic character. Stallone’s career flourished as a result, making him a household name.
“I Play Rocky” Set for Release
Amazon plans to release “I Play Rocky” in November. While Stallone himself is not directly involved, Anthony Ippolito stars as Stallone, with AnnaSophia Robb playing Stallone’s first wife, Sasha Czack. The cast includes Stephan James, Matt Dillon, and P.J. Byrne.
