Troy Jackson Secures Democratic Nomination for Maine U.S. Senate Race

In Bangor, Maine, former state lawmaker and logger Troy Jackson has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Maine. Jackson will face long-serving GOP Senator Susan Collins in the election this November. This race could determine the Senate’s control.

Jackson replaces Graham Platner, who withdrew from the race after winning the Democratic primary in June. Platner stepped down due to an allegation of sexual assault, which he has denied. The Maine Democratic Party convened on Saturday to choose a new nominee to oppose Collins.

Support quickly gathered around Jackson, a former Maine Senate president and fifth-generation logger from northern Maine. Known for his progressive stances, he had campaigned alongside Platner in a previous gubernatorial bid.

“When the people in power refuse to listen, you have to organize, you have to stand in solidarity, together. And you have to make them listen,” Jackson stated during his speech at the convention.

The Maine Democratic Party needed to act quickly and select a new nominee after Platner’s departure. Platner, who had initially secured a win in the primary, faced a setback due to the allegation made by a former girlfriend. Platner denied the claim, but his supporters encouraged him to step aside.

Maine presents a valuable opportunity for Democrats to flip a Senate seat. The state, which former President Donald Trump lost in 2024, is seen as a competitive arena for the party. However, taking on Collins presents challenges. The incumbent holds a fundraising advantage over Jackson, who now has under four months to engage with voters.

Maine law mandated that the party select a replacement by Monday, 99 days before the November 3 election. The party’s convention included hundreds of Democratic delegates gathering in Bangor, about 130 miles from Portland. Delegates elected at recent county meetings participated in this process.

Jackson’s victory was anticipated, supported by more than 480 pledges from delegates. He secured 566 out of 571 votes. His campaign emphasizes progressive policies such as Medicare for All and dismantling the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Initially, Jackson ran for office as a Republican in 2000 but gained office years later as an independent. He joined the Democratic Party in 2004 and eventually became the Maine Senate president.

During this election cycle, Jackson enjoyed support from figures like U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who initially backed him for governor and Platner for Senate. After the allegations against Platner, however, Sanders withdrew his support for Platner and chose not to endorse a replacement nominee.

Jackson’s main competition for the nomination was Saundra Pelletier, CEO of a women’s health company. Despite her candidacy, Jackson’s established presence in Maine politics helped him become the clear front-runner.

Progressives rallied behind Jackson, endorsing him after the withdrawal of Platner. The group Our Revolution had supported Jackson for governor, reaffirming their backing after Platner’s exit. Jackson had previously managed Sanders’ Maine operations for his 2016 presidential campaign.

Maine plays a crucial role in Democratic hopes to regain the Senate. Success there would complement efforts in other states, including North Carolina, Alaska, and Ohio. Democrats aim to maintain their current seats, such as those open in Michigan and Minnesota, where retiring incumbents present challenges.

Jackson’s task extends beyond political positions to building financial resources. Federal records reveal that Collins has raised over $16 million, a significant fundraising difference. Jackson’s recent efforts have brought in over $1 million. His campaign message resonates with those desiring change in the current political landscape.

“We’re not from the left, we’re not from the right. We’re from the bottom, and we are rising,” Jackson declared.
