Riley Gaines Criticizes Nancy Armour Over Controversial Column

Riley Gaines, known for hosting “The Riley Gaines Show,” sharply criticized USA Today writer Nancy Armour for a controversial column connecting Caitlin Clark’s actions with the historical lynching of Emmett Till. Armour’s opinion piece drew comparisons between Till’s tragic death and accusations of Caitlin Clark putting Black and queer WNBA players “in danger.”

“It shouldn’t need reminding this country has an awful history of Black people being harmed, even killed, in the name of ‘defending’ White women,” Armour wrote. She also highlighted the coincidence of the WNBA All-Star Game occurring in Chicago, Till’s hometown.

“The local art gallery is currently hosting an exhibit imagining his life if he hadn’t been lynched. While it’s incumbent on the WNBA to do more to protect its players, there also should be an expectation on Clark to recognize the broader implications of her actions being weaponized,” Armour continued.

On her show, Gaines expressed strong disapproval of Armour’s column. “Do you realize what Nancy Armour is doing there? She’s connecting Emmett Till’s lynching to Caitlin Clark’s talent,” Gaines stated, expressing bafflement over the comparison. Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black teen, was violently killed in 1955 Mississippi after being accused by a White woman.

Gaines deemed Armour’s comparison “insane,” stating that it showed a lack of rational thinking. “In what world do those two things connect?” Gaines questioned, criticizing Armour’s approach as “rage-bait.” She suspected Armour’s mention of Emmett Till was intended to provoke strong reactions.

In response to the backlash, Armour apologized for the “inartful comparison.” She clarified her intention was to highlight issues faced by the WNBA during the All-Star Game in Till’s hometown, Chicago, acknowledging the lack of sufficient context in her writing.
