Tensions Rise Between NYC Mayor and Jewish Community Over Netanyahu Comments

Recent remarks by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have sparked controversy among the Jewish community. Mamdani admitted he lacks the legal power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which has done little to ease the divide.

Several Jewish leaders expressed their unease with the mayor’s rhetoric. They believe it intensifies fractions during a sensitive period marked by concerns over antisemitism. Since Mamdani’s campaign, Israel has been a key tension point between him and New York City’s Jewish population.

While campaigning, Mamdani vowed to pursue Netanyahu’s arrest, despite lacking authority. He recently admitted this lack of power. The issue resurfaced with Mamdani’s video, stating that although New York City cannot arrest Netanyahu, he should face charges under the International Criminal Court.

Mamdani’s video did not alleviate the concerns of Jewish leaders about his divisive rhetoric.

In a social media post, Mamdani declared Netanyahu a “war criminal” and criticized his actions against Palestinians. He noted that City Hall lacks the jurisdiction to execute the International Criminal Court’s warrant should Netanyahu visit. Nonetheless, Mamdani stated Netanyahu is “not welcome” in New York City.

Jewish leaders told Fox News Digital that Mamdani’s statements worry them about his impact on community harmony. At a news conference, Mamdani emphasized the importance of protest for expressing support or opposition, hinting at Netanyahu’s potential UN General Assembly visit.

Rabbi Dr. Josh Joseph from the Orthodox Union expressed outcry over Mamdani’s comments, fearing they might incite violence amid recent tensions over the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Rabbi Mark Wildes of the Manhattan Jewish Experience criticized Mamdani for what he perceives as hostility toward Israel. He views the mayor’s statements as undermining Israel’s legitimacy, unrelated to Netanyahu’s policies.

Wildes believes Mamdani’s remarks risk further alienating Jewish residents who already feel vulnerable. He interprets the “not welcome” comment as a signal of exclusion from city leadership.

Mamdani has condemned actions supporting Hamas, yet faces criticism for harsher criticism against Israel.

Rabbi Joseph emphasized that Mamdani must choose his words carefully given his influential role. Despite these challenges, Jewish leaders remain optimistic about their community’s resilience.

Rabbi Wildes mentioned that political pressures would not weaken Jewish ties to Israel or New York City.

The mayor’s office did not promptly respond to requests for further comments from Fox News Digital.
