Tragedy Strikes at Berlin Pride Parade

A car plowed into a crowd during Berlin’s renowned LGBTQ+ parade on Saturday, resulting in one death and injuries to at least 16 people. Authorities canceled the event in the capital hours after it began. Some victims suffered life-threatening injuries. Emergency services, including firefighters and ambulances, arrived promptly to assist.

The incident at Kemperplatz prompted police to urge attendees to evacuate immediately via a post on X. The vehicle entered Tiergarten park, striking several individuals near the pride march route. An investigation is ongoing, with authorities searching for suspects. A police representative stated in a video that the search for suspects is intensive.

Police spokesperson Alexander Klute informed the Associated Press that details about the motive, or identity of the perpetrator remain unknown. The pride parade, known locally as Christopher Street Day, drew hundreds of thousands of participants, making it one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ events. Eventgoers began at Brandenburger Tor under the 2026 theme, ‘Having principles is hot – Blessing instead of hate.’

The celebration halted around 10:15 p.m. when authorities canceled performances and urged people to avoid Tiergarten park. Prior to the tragedy, attendees enjoyed a peaceful day, marching and dancing alongside approximately 80 floats. Julian Miethig, a parade participant, described hearing about the emergency from a friend while heading to an afterparty. He expressed shock that such a tragic event could occur at Berlin’s pride celebration, calling it a ‘dark day for the community.’
