Cosmonauts and Astronaut Return from International Space Station
On Sunday, two Russian cosmonauts and a NASA astronaut completed a 241-day mission on the International Space Station (ISS), landing in Kazakhstan. The crew, comprised of commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, flight engineer Sergey Mikaev, and NASA’s Chris Williams, returned aboard the Soyuz MS-28/74S capsule.
The spacecraft undocked from the ISS at 3:03 a.m. EDT. Following a two-and-a-half-hour journey, the Soyuz capsule re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, experiencing a fiery descent. At 6:27 a.m. EDT, the crew capsule touched down near Dzhezkazgan.
The mission covered 102 million miles, encapsulating 3,856 orbits since it launched on November 27.
Upon landing, Russian recovery teams swiftly assisted the astronauts out of the capsule. After more than eight months in space, the team began adjusting to Earth’s gravity. As is customary, they received initial medical checks and some fresh fruit.
Sergey Kud-Sverchkov expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am feeling better and better with each moment. I would like to thank everyone who supported this landing. Everything was smooth and perfect.”
The returning crew received Russian matryoshka dolls as gifts. Reflecting on their camaraderie, Williams joked about the vodka inside the dolls, emphasizing the bond formed with his crewmates.
Post-landing procedures involved a helicopter transport to Karaganda. From there, Chris Williams faced a flight to Houston, while his Russian colleagues headed to Star City, near Moscow.
This mission marked Chris Williams’ first space flight. He participated in two spacewalks, involving the repair of the robotic arm and preparation for solar panel installation. Kud-Sverchkov and Mikaev also conducted a maintenance spacewalk.
Praising his team, Williams noted, “Sergey and Sergey are both just wonderful people, really kind, super interested, super intellectually curious,” during a NASA interview before the mission.
As the Soyuz MS-28/74S departed, Crew 12 commander Jessica Meir took over ISS command. The station was also home to European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot and cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. Replacements Pyotr Dubrov, Anna Kikina, and Anil Menon joined the crew from Baikonur Cosmodrome on July 14.
Looking back on his career, Williams, a former firefighter and medical physicist, shared his lifelong passion for space exploration. “As far back as I can remember, I was always fascinated by space,” he said. Watching Earth from the ISS reminded him of the beauty and complexity of the planet.
