Pub Owner Transforms Derelict Bus Shelter into Community Gem

A neglected bus shelter has been completely renovated, featuring art, books, and even a chandelier. This change came about after Molly Thompson, the owner of a historic pub, decided to take action.

A Vision for Change

Molly Thompson, 27, owns the Woolpack pub in Chilham, Kent. Frustrated with the rundown shelter near her establishment, she decided it was time for a change. The bus stop stood as a neglected eyesore until Thompson, feeling compelled to act, sought proper approval from the local council.

“I live here with my dog Wallace and saw the dilapidated structure daily,” Thompson shared. “We knew we needed to maintain the village’s aesthetic, while also bringing something special.”

Community Support and Fundraising

Thompson’s initiative was not solitary; it quickly gained local support. The Woolpack held fundraising events and drew donations. “We found £100 delivered anonymously,” Thompson recalled. Such community generosity combined efforts to raise approximately £1,000 or $1,340 U.S.

After council approval, Thompson, with her mother and others, began the transformation process. The revamped bus shelter emerging as a standout in the neighborhood.

A New Look and Feel

Repainting and decoration with hanging baskets marked the exterior’s upgrade. Interior enhancements included securing a vase to prevent vandalism, all completed in about four days.

“Graffiti, dirt, and a bad smell once marred the shelter,” Thompson reflected. “Now it’s praised as one of the best and cutest in the U.K.”

While another bus shelter remains in use, Thompson expressed interest in potential future projects, highlighting the community’s beauty and charm.
