David Jonsson Announced as New Black Panther

During Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, director Ryan Coogler revealed that David Jonsson will be the new Black Panther. Jonsson will portray T’Challa’s son in the upcoming film, Black Panther 3, set to release on December 15, 2028.

The announcement, made on Saturday, also confirmed Coogler’s return as director for the third installment in the series. Onstage alongside Coogler at the event, Jonsson expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join.” He chose to keep further details brief, adding, “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let this screen do the talking.” The audience responded with enthusiastic applause.

Chadwick Boseman first played T’Challa in the initial Black Panther film before he passed away from colon cancer in 2020. Letitia Wright then assumed a leading role as Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Jonsson’s casting marks a significant transition, introducing him as Prince T’Challa II, who was introduced in the second film as a young prince. In the third film, the character will come of age and assume the Black Panther mantle.
