Chinese Users Access U.S. AI Systems Despite Restrictions

In China, a growing number of workers, students, and AI enthusiasts are turning to prominent American AI solutions like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. They are achieving this by navigating through technical barriers, employing VPNs, company accounts, and other workarounds. These actions persist even as U.S. companies attempt to limit their technology’s use in China and despite heightened warnings from American policymakers concerning national security risks associated with Chinese access to U.S. products.

During the recent World AI Conference in Shanghai, many attendees were introduced to China’s significant technological development, the Sugon 8000. This is China’s first fully domestic AI computing cluster, demonstrating the nation’s strides in artificial intelligence.

The ongoing use of American AI tools in China underscores the demand for advanced technology across the globe and highlights tensions over its control. As AI continues to advance, the policies governing its distribution and access remain points of contention on the international stage.
