A recent study investigates the impact of hyperscale data centers on local economies. Justin Ross, a professor of public finance and economics at Indiana University, collaborated with Saurav Roychoudhury from Capital University to conduct this research. They aimed to provide a clear understanding of the economic effects of these centers.
Significant Regional Benefits
The study, funded by the Northwest Indiana Forum, specifically assessed the economic contributions of data centers in Northwest Indiana. This is where Microsoft is constructing a 1-gigawatt facility. Ross estimates this facility will contribute $16.1 billion to the regional economy over 20 years. It will also provide 14,651 job-years in construction, resulting in $1.08 billion in earnings from construction jobs. Additionally, once operational, it will support 2,090 ongoing jobs in the region, generating annual worker earnings of $176 million.
The impact of data centers stretches further with Amazon’s development in Hobart. Expected to operate at 1.5 gigawatts, it will produce a lifetime regional output of $24.2 billion and 21,979 construction job-years. This exemplifies the substantial economic influence these facilities can have on a local economy, generating sustained economic activity.
Study Methods and Considerations
Ross was keen on deriving accurate data without bias. The Northwest Indiana Forum, a supporter of data center projects, didn’t influence the findings. Heather Ennis, its President and CEO, expressed optimism in the study’s conservative nature and its findings.
Michael Hicks from Ball State University offers a contrasting view. He suggests that data centers might not significantly contribute to local economies beyond construction phase jobs. Factors such as taxation and energy use influence their benefit.
Ross and Roychoudhury faced the challenge of dealing with limited and changing data, given the rapid industry evolution. They utilized standard modeling with conservative assumptions while analyzing construction and operational costs.
Energy and Infrastructure Challenges
Energy is a crucial issue for data centers. Some centers generate their own energy, influencing regional energy policies. NiSource has developed separate provisions for data centers to ensure that other customers aren’t impacted by their energy demands. Existing customers could see decreased energy bills as centers become operational, due to more efficient energy use.
The supply chain also faces challenges. Turbine manufacturing, crucial for energy production, is limited. Ross observes ways to overcome these issues through adjusting production and exploring alternative energy sources like solar and natural gas.
Local Workforce Impact
In Columbus, Ohio, the construction of data centers has positively affected local trade jobs. Skilled trades such as electricians and plumbers are in high demand, enhancing job prospects in the area.
As the industry transitions, the challenge remains to understand the full long-term implications of data centers on local economies. While they offer substantial economic potential, factors such as job creation, infrastructure, and energy use require careful consideration.
