Shanahan Temporarily Steps Back as 49ers Start Training Camp
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Head coach Kyle Shanahan made a brief appearance at the San Francisco 49ers’ practice, a relief to see following his recent car accident. Despite suffering a concussion and multiple injuries, his presence on the field for 30 minutes was reassuring. Star linebacker Fred Warner noted Shanahan’s passion for football wouldn’t let him stay away for long.
Currently, Shanahan has stepped away from his duties, entrusting assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster to lead the team temporarily. The accident, which occurred on July 14, left Shanahan with a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, and a broken hand. He plans to return once his concussion symptoms have improved. At practice, Shanahan sported a cast and sunglasses due to his injuries, prompting Warner to joke about his ‘disguise’.
Offensive tackle Trent Williams commented on Shanahan’s dedication, saying, “It’s going to be hard for him to get his rest.” The team, with its experienced roster and coaching staff, is managing well, almost operating on ‘auto pilot’, according to Williams. Foerster and other coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer have maintained the practice schedule set before the accident.
Foerster, a seasoned NFL coach since 1993, has seamlessly taken charge. Williams expressed pride in Foerster’s leadership, highlighting their deep ties. Foerster’s history with Shanahan dates back to their time together in Washington. Despite a past setback in Miami, Foerster has found strong support and redemption with Shanahan and the 49ers.
“He’s one of my best friends in the world,” Foerster shared. “This organization has shown incredible loyalty, which I will never forget.”
On the player front, defensive end Nick Bosa resumed individual drills after recovering from an ACL tear last season. Observers noted no visible signs of his prior injury. Williams remarked on Bosa’s impressive recovery, stating he appeared stronger post-rehabilitation.
Other team updates included OL Vederian Lowe leaving practice with an ankle injury. CB Nate Hobbs was the only active player absent from practice. The 49ers recently signed DT Kevin Givens, previously released Evan Anderson, and identified Connor Colby as the contender for the starting left guard position, following his performance as a seventh-round rookie last season.
