Historic Documents Removed from Lincoln Memorial Due to Unsafe Heat Levels

Two historic documents signed by President Abraham Lincoln were temporarily removed from the Lincoln Memorial on July 16. This was done after officials discovered that the temperatures in their display cases had risen to unsafe levels. Despite the heat exposure, both documents remained undamaged.

The documents were part of an exhibit located in the Lincoln Memorial’s undercroft, an area below the main structure. The decision to remove them was taken as a precaution to protect these valuable artifacts. A spokesperson from the donor organization confirmed on Monday that the documents were unharmed.

An image captured on June 18 shows a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Lincoln, on display at the site. Concerns about maintaining proper environmental conditions for historical artifacts highlight the importance of preserving such documents for future generations.
