Eric Bieniemy’s Son Charged in Shooting Incident

The son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been charged in connection with a shooting involving his mother, Mia Bieniemy. Authorities in Virginia stated that Elijah Zion Bieniemy was arrested early Monday for the incident.

According to the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting late Sunday in Ashburn, Virginia. This home was maintained from Eric Bieniemy’s time with the Washington Commanders. They discovered 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was swiftly taken to a hospital, where her condition was stable as of Monday.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, aged 27, faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. The sheriff’s office noted that the investigation continues.

Eric Bieniemy was with the Chiefs at their training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier on Sunday. He did not attend Monday’s closed workout session. In response to the situation, the Chiefs issued a statement: “The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Eric Bieniemy has been with the Chiefs since 2013, initially joining as part of Andy Reid’s first staff as the running backs coach. Promoted to offensive coordinator, he has contributed to the team’s successful runs to three Super Bowls, securing two championships. Despite interviewing for several head-coaching positions, Bieniemy continually sought new opportunities. He joined the Commanders in 2023 and later spent time at UCLA as offensive coordinator and with the Bears as running backs coach.

This season, Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs as the offensive coordinator, replacing Matt Nagy. He was active in offseason workouts and present as the team reported for training camp last week. The Chiefs have a day off on Tuesday, with the full squad scheduled for a workout at Missouri Western State University on Wednesday.

Last week, Chiefs coach Andy Reid expressed enthusiasm about Bieniemy’s return, emphasizing his leadership qualities and work ethic. “It’s great to have him back in the building,” Reid said. “He always brings great energy. He is one of the more phenomenal guys I have been around at being a leader of men.”
