Cracker Barrel announced that CEO Julie Masino will step down nearly a year after a modernizing effort backfired, leading to significant customer discontent. The restaurant chain, known for its traditional Southern aesthetic, tried to update its image last summer. This included removing the ‘Old Timer’ character, Uncle Herschel, from branding, which cost the company $700 million across its 660-plus locations.
The rebranding involved a minimalist logo and modernized store interiors. Traditional elements, such as decorative knickknacks, were scaled back. The response from loyal customers was overwhelmingly negative, with many expressing disappointment on social media. Critics argued the move abandoned the nostalgic charm that was central to the brand. Some conservatives accused the company of embracing political trends they disliked, leading to claims of ‘wokeness,’ which motivated some to boycott the restaurant.
The backlash put Cracker Barrel in a similar position to brands like Bud Light and Target, which have faced conservative criticism in the past. CEO Masino acknowledged that the intention was to enhance the guest experience but admitted to misjudging what customers valued. In response, the company reversed the changes. A social media post featuring a 32-second video showed the restoration of the original ‘Old Timer’ sign and decoration removal from a remodeled location.
The rebrand debacle even caught the attention of former President Donald Trump, who publicly urged a return to the original design. He later praised Cracker Barrel for heeding public demand. This high-profile endorsement highlighted how widespread the reaction had become.
Despite attempts to course-correct, Cracker Barrel has struggled with sales and customer traffic following the failed rebrand. Less than a year later, Julie Masino is set to exit the CEO position but will stay in an advisory role until October 9. David Deno, her successor, expressed admiration for the chain’s reputation. He described it as a ‘truly iconic American brand’ that connects with guests through its warm hospitality and timeless appeal.
