Georgia Man Survives Shark Bite While Protecting Fiancée

A young Georgia man is recovering after a shark attacked him on a Florida beach. He was protecting his pregnant fiancée during the ordeal.

The incident occurred at Dunlawton Beach in Daytona Beach Shores. It happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. as the man was wading in waist-deep water. The attack took place just hours before the start of Shark Week. A shark, about 4 feet long, bit him on the left foot and ankle. Volusia County Beach Safety officials provided this information to Fox News Digital.

“He was treated on scene by Beach Safety personnel and transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” officials confirmed.

Fox 5 Atlanta identified the victim as Jacorey High from Henry County, Georgia. His main concern was ensuring his fiancée was safe. High recounted, I realized right away it was a shark because of the way it bit down on my foot, but I was more worried about getting my fiancée out of the water.

High described the shark’s continued pursuit. Then it came up to try to get my arm. So I had to push it away from me. I ran, and it tried to get my other leg, he explained.

Upon reaching the shore, High recognized the severity of his injuries. I didn’t really feel it until I got to the hospital, when they started giving me medicine for it, he noted. Doctors later operated on his foot, and High expects a recovery period of about three months. He hopes the injury hasn’t damaged anything crucial in his foot, allowing him to return to work.

Experts warn beachgoers to be vigilant due to increased shark sightings. Marine biologist Mike Heithaus, from Florida International University, said shark bites remain rare. He advised people to avoid murky water and stay away from active fishing areas.
