Destruction and Trapped Victims After Earthquake in Southern Japan

A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan, leaving multiple individuals trapped inside a mall and causing significant destruction. Local fire officials reported that the seismic event severely damaged the AEON Mall, resulting in emergency situations inside the facility. An explosion was reported on the mall’s second floor. State broadcaster NHK showed images of numerous fire trucks stationed in the mall’s parking lot and depicted visuals of collapsed ceilings, facades, and debris-covered roads.

Impact of the 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, suspending bullet train services across affected regions. Passengers were seen crowding at JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka due to halted services. In Kumamoto Prefecture, images captured fallen shelves and damaged office equipment. The quake caused the exterior wall of a store in Kumamoto City to collapse.

Widespread Damage and Fires

State broadcaster NHK reported the collapse of at least 12 buildings, with four cases where people remained trapped. The city of Yatsushiro was particularly affected, located in Kumamoto Prefecture. Aerial footage revealed significant damage to commercial facilities and malls, including collapsed ceilings and exposed structures. Additionally, pillars supporting a shrine fell, and at least seven fires ignited in the region. A building in the area also caught fire.

The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed the earthquake’s strong magnitude and clarified its depth at approximately 10 kilometers, around 6 miles. Occurring at 4:27 p.m. local time, the earthquake led to a tsunami warning for the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas, which was later lifted. Despite the warning being called off, the impact struck a chord with residents and global observers.
