Major Earthquake Strikes Southern Japan, Prompting Quick Response
Sendai Nuclear Plant Remains Safe
The International Atomic Energy Agency was informed by Japan’s nuclear authority that the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant sustained no damage from the recent earthquake. The U.N. watchdog stated, ‘The IAEA will continue to monitor the situation,’ in a post on X. Attention on Japan’s nuclear facilities has been heightened since the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
Disaster Response Initiated
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the deployment of 300 members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces to southern Japan for disaster relief. Their aim is to assist affected areas following the earthquake.
Emergency Rescue Operations at AEON Mall
Local fire officials reported that multiple people became trapped in a mall after the earthquake struck southern Japan. The partially destroyed AEON Mall faced further danger with an explosion on its second floor, as per state broadcaster NHK. Footage displayed the presence of numerous fire trucks in the mall’s parking area alongside visible destruction to its ceilings and facade.
Impact of the Earthquake Visible
The earthquake caused disruptions across the region. Passengers crowded JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka as bullet train services halted due to the 7.1-magnitude quake. In Kumamoto Prefecture, fallen shelves and office equipment were visible damage signs, alongside a collapsed exterior wall in Kumamoto City.
Extensive Building Damage and Fires Reported
State broadcaster NHK reported at least 12 building collapses, with four involving trapped individuals. Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture was notably affected, with aerial footage revealing a large commercial facility and mall suffering a collapsed ceiling. Structural failures included shrine pillars collapsing and a building fire. Kumamoto prefecture recorded at least seven fires.
Magnitude and Tsunami Warning Details
The earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kilometers, struck southern Japan on Tuesday. It caused train derailments and dozens of injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas shortly after the quake, but the warning was later lifted.
Japan’s Seismic Vulnerability
Japan is prone to frequent earthquakes due to its position on the ‘Ring of Fire,’ where several tectonic plates meet. Approximately 20% of global earthquakes measuring 6.0 or higher occur in Japan. Since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami led to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Japan has significantly improved its earthquake warning systems and evacuation procedures.
