USDA Extends Temporary Accommodation for Foreign Food in School Meals

For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) allows schools to apply for a temporary “accommodation” regarding the new foreign food limits in school meals.

By July 28, 2026, the USDA has confirmed that schools can continue to purchase foreign food items due to this flexibility. This measure helps address immediate supply challenges.

A notable example is the provision for bananas in school cafeterias. Schools can still acquire bananas and other foreign food products as needed. This flexibility gives schools a reprieve under the new “Buy American” guidelines.
