Senator Johnson Discusses Fauci’s Accountability and Filibuster Strategy

Sen. Ron Johnson from Wisconsin spoke about his efforts to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci accountable for his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic. He shared his views during an interview on the ‘Ruthless’ podcast, where he also introduced a new filibuster strategy for the Senate.

Johnson criticized the U.S. response to COVID-19, calling it a ‘miserably failed response’ that infringed on freedoms. He expressed disappointment in the lack of accountability for Fauci, who has gone six years without facing consequences. As chair of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Johnson authored a report claiming the Biden administration misled the public during the pandemic.

The interview came shortly after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, led by Sen. Rand Paul, released Fauci’s daily journal entries. These entries detail Fauci’s rise to fame, his interactions with the Trump and Biden administrations, and his thoughts on the origins of the virus. Fauci is scheduled to testify at a Senate Homeland Security hearing.

Fauci’s pandemic handling, including public health guidelines and views on the virus’ origins, has been a contentious topic for Republicans. Fauci served on pandemic task forces and was President Biden’s chief medical advisor until 2022.

Johnson praised Chairman Rand Paul for his efforts in acquiring documents and mentioned the challenge in obtaining them. He noted they’ve received some information from Fauci’s devices and believes more documents are yet to be revealed.

In addition to addressing the pandemic, Johnson outlined a strategy to address the filibuster process in the Senate. He warned that if Democrats regain full control of Congress, they might eliminate the filibuster, allowing them to pass legislation on a party-line basis. Johnson suggested requiring a Senate rule that demands 67 votes to end the filibuster, preventing use of the nuclear option.
