American Red Cross Faces Blood Supply Crisis

The American Red Cross announced a national blood supply crisis, marking the second such event in its history. This declaration follows a noticeable decline in blood donations, reaching a four-year low during the summer months.

A combination of factors has contributed to this situation. The organization identified extreme heat and poor air quality as significant influences on the reduced donor turnout. Additionally, the spread of foodborne illnesses has further discouraged donations.

Summertime typically sees a drop in blood donations due to vacation schedules. Furthermore, the season involves more outdoor activities, leading to higher injury rates and increased demand for blood.
