60 Minutes Introduces New Correspondents Amid Fresh Leadership

CBS’s ’60 Minutes’ welcomes a lineup of new correspondents and contributors for its 59th season. Among the newcomers are Ross Douthat, a conservative opinion columnist for The New York Times, and Norah O’Donnell, former anchor of ‘CBS Evening News.’

Nick Bilton, the new executive producer, shared this news in a staff memo. In addition to Douthat and O’Donnell, the team includes author Sebastian Junger, Trevor Phillips, and Gianna Toboni. These new faces join the existing correspondents Lesley Stahl, Jon Wertheim, and Bill Whitaker.

The changes follow a recent overhaul of the program initiated by the network’s editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss. Weiss appointed Bilton, who has limited broadcast news experience, to replace longtime executive producer Tanya Simon. Several correspondents, including Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, were also let go, culminating in Scott Pelley’s departure after confronting management over the changes. Anderson Cooper announced his own departure earlier this year.

Bari Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski welcomed the new hires enthusiastically. Bilton praised Douthat as an influential public intellectual and credited O’Donnell as a dynamic presence familiar to CBS viewers. Sebastian Junger received acclaim for his nonfiction work, ‘The Perfect Storm.’ Gianna Toboni, formerly of VICE News and CNN, brings significant experience in investigative journalism, including coverage of ISIS and cartel violence. Trevor Phillips, based in London, will contribute his expertise in global affairs.

’60 Minutes’ has experienced challenges recently, including legal issues with former President Donald Trump over a controversial interview edit. The shakeup is part of a broader restructuring at CBS News, following Weiss’s elevation to editor-in-chief and shifts in corporate leadership.
