During a preliminary hearing in Provo, Utah, explosive testimony emerged in the trial of Tyler Robinson, accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk. Robinson’s former roommate, Lance Twiggs, provided key evidence, detailing how Robinson admitted to the crime.
Twiggs, granted immunity, shared text messages and personal confessions in which Robinson confessed to killing Kirk. The prosecution argues that the evidence is strong enough to push the case to trial. Prosecutors recently submitted a written brief to Judge Tony Graf, urging a trial based on what they describe as overwhelming probable cause.
“This is likely as straightforward a bindover decision as this Court will ever see,” prosecutors stated.
They highlighted Robinson’s admissions to his friends about assassinating Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Robinson had previously turned himself in for the crime.
Additional evidence presented includes DNA testing, surveillance video, and eyewitness accounts. Combined, these elements construct a strong case against Robinson. Prosecutors affirm that these pieces of evidence demonstrate probable cause for all charges.
Text messages between Robinson and Twiggs were also shared in court. Robinson reportedly expressed regret, saying, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it.” Furthermore, he mentioned planning the event for over a week and surrendered to authorities willingly after the event.
Judge Tony Graf has requested written arguments following the completion of the preliminary hearing. Robinson faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder, with the prosecution seeking the death penalty.
The defense is expected to respond with written opposition soon. Oral arguments are scheduled to take place on September 1.
Robinson, 23, is yet to enter a plea. He faces aggravated murder charges, along with additional felony and misdemeanor counts, related to the fatal shooting of Kirk.
