Trump Administration’s Approach to Diversity and Inclusion Policies

The Trump administration focuses on addressing perceived racism and sexism against white men. During Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, he emphasized an ‘anti-white’ sentiment, vowing to end diversity, equity, and inclusion policies he argued were discriminatory against whites, particularly white men.
His administration has acted on this promise, directing federal agencies to dismantle initiatives promoting diversity. They have used civil rights laws originally designed in the 1960s to protect Black people and women to primarily assist white men. Moreover, enforcement of laws safeguarding women and minorities from discrimination has decreased.
A notable action was the July 21 decision by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to stop requiring employers to provide demographic details on their workforce. This reporting, in place since 1966, helped the EEOC handle over 88,000 annual discrimination complaints efficiently by guiding case priorities.
In 2023, 73,000 employers reported workforce demographics, covering over 50 million employees. While data for 2024 has been collected, it remains unreleased. NPR reported that white men, one-third of the U.S. workforce, held 53% of top jobs. Asian men and white and Asian women were proportionately represented, but Black and Hispanic individuals faced underrepresentation.
EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, appointed by Trump, released a video encouraging white men experiencing discrimination to report claims. Ending future demographic data collection won’t eliminate workplace discrimination against minorities and women. It only obscures it, supported by the two Republican commission members, while opposed by the lone Democratic member.
This action echoes Trump’s earlier statement during the COVID pandemic, suggesting fewer tests would mean fewer cases. Early in his second term, Trump signed executive orders branding diversity programs ‘illegal and immoral,’ leading federal and other sectors to reduce or end DEI efforts.
Trump’s stated goal is merit-based job and college admissions, yet this relies on a belief that white men possess superior merit, disregarding the abilities of minorities and women. His campaign attempted to attract Black voters by claiming unauthorized immigrants took jobs meant for them, implying Black people were only suited for low-paying jobs.
As a Black woman, I’ve faced constant underestimation and heard assumptions that race and gender were the only reasons for job opportunities. If being Black or female were advantageous, why do Black households earn nearly $84,000 compared to $124,500 for white households?
My experiences with racism and sexism date back to my childhood in Louisiana under Jim Crow laws. Although the nation has progressed, eliminating racism and sexism won’t happen by shifting victimhood to white men.
