Willie Nelson Calls for Action Against Data Centers in Rural Areas

Willie Nelson, at 93, has urged Americans to reconsider the future they are building. On Tuesday, he asked followers to oppose data centers encroaching on rural lands through a message on social media.

The country music icon reminisced about enjoying the night stars from his Texas hometown. However, he warned that light pollution and water misuse were becoming serious threats due to industrial expansion.

Willie Nelson urged his followers to consider the environmental effects of data centers.

Nelson shared, “I grew up in Abbott and maintain a home there with farmland where the stars are visible at night. Now, like many communities, we need to resist data centers encroaching on our land.”

He added, “We don’t need a disruptive, resource-consuming data center near our town or others.” Nelson highlighted that the strength of rural America lies in generations of people, open spaces, local businesses, and their connection to the land.

He stated, “All of America must focus on considerate management of resources that protect farmland vital to our food supply and the livelihoods of small farmers, not data centers that harm the environment.”

Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses. We must not surrender control over essential resources in the U.S., particularly in Abbott.

Nelson has long championed environmental causes, raising over $90 million through Farm Aid, a nonprofit he founded with John Mellencamp and Neil Young over 40 years ago. Launched in 1985, the charity aims to highlight the plight of family farms and provide funds to sustain them.

On the same day, Governor Greg Abbott called for a ban on data center developments in rural Texas. At a campaign event in Bullard, Abbott stated, “We must restrict the construction of AI data centers in rural Texas areas.”

Nelson has raised over $90 million through Farm Aid, which he founded with John Mellencamp and Neil Young.

Abbott emphasized, “Any AI data center considering setting up here must be self-funded, self-powered, recycle water, and reduce electricity costs for Texas residents.” He also called for the removal of tax incentives provided to these projects. “They should fund their own initiatives here in Texas,” Abbott concluded.
