Atlanta Falcons Face Early Quarterback Challenges in NFL Training Camp

As NFL training camp kicks off, the Atlanta Falcons are already grappling with quarterback injury challenges. Tua Tagovailoa, who joined the team in the offseason to compete with Michael Penix Jr. for the starting position, has experienced a ‘flare-up’ of an undisclosed injury. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed the situation but did not specify the details. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Tagovailoa is dealing with tightness in his back.

Despite not revealing the exact nature of Tagovailoa’s issue, Stefanski expressed optimism, suggesting that he expects Tagovailoa to return to practice soon.

With Penix Jr. still in recovery from a torn ACL he suffered last season — potentially missing the first four weeks of training camp — the Falcons have brought in veteran backup Cooper Rush to strengthen their quarterback roster. The team released Trevor Siemian, leaving undrafted rookie Jack Strand as the only healthy quarterback remaining.

Penix participated in individual drills and 7-on-7 workouts but has not fully engaged in team activities. He shared that he is not rushing his recovery after enduring four season-ending injuries during his time at Indiana before transferring to Washington. “This is the third ACL. We’re not taking it lightly,” he stated.

Head coach Stefanski acknowledges that unexpected injuries can impact a team’s plans, even as training camp begins. The Falcons are not only under scrutiny due to the quarterback situation but also because of their revamped management. The team, now led by legendary quarterback Matt Ryan in the role of president of football, aims for a playoff return. Since their last playoff appearance in 2017, the Falcons have not achieved a record at or above .500.
