Democratic Figures Criticize NYC Mayor Mamdani’s Policies

Two notable Democratic figures with connections to the Clinton and Obama administrations have openly criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Former Clinton adviser Mark Penn and ex-Obama White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel voiced their concerns over Mamdani’s property tax plan and his stance on Israel, respectively.

This criticism is significant as it comes from established Democrat insiders and highlights the two main issues that have marked Mamdani’s political ascent: his economic agenda and his views on Israel.

Penn’s Critique of Property Tax Plan

Mark Penn, a seasoned Democratic strategist and former adviser to President Bill Clinton, accused Mamdani of greatly underestimating the scope of his proposed pied-à-terre tax. This came after the mayor released a public database of property owners who might be affected.

“The $5 million figure was a fake,” Penn stated, arguing that the city’s valuation system wrongly classified properties, affecting nearly one million property owners, contrary to the previously stated figure of around 30,000 luxury homeowners.

Penn further suggested the proposal might lower property values, deter investment in New York City, and possibly lead to constitutional issues.

Emanuel’s Concerns on Israel Stance

During an appearance on the Unholy Podcast, Rahm Emanuel shared details of a private meeting with Mamdani, where he challenged the mayor’s views on Israel. While he endorsed parts of Mamdani’s domestic policies, like childcare, Emanuel criticized Mamdani’s use of the phrase “from the river to the sea.”

According to Emanuel, both calls for a “Greater Israel” and this slogan would result in “perpetual conflict.” Emanuel emphasized knowing the limits in political discourse.

Anna Bahr, Mamdani’s communications director, contested Emanuel’s account on social media.

Emanuel’s Broader Criticism of DSA

Emanuel also recently criticized the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in a separate social media post, emphasizing that Democrats should prioritize winning competitive elections rather than focusing on ideological issues.

“You can be focused on winning tough races, flipping red seats blue. Or you can be focused on abolishing prisons and… the Senate and Supreme Court? You can’t do both,” Emanuel wrote, advocating for electoral victories.
