The Ohio State Buckeyes are favorites to claim the national championship in the 2026 season. Last year, despite an undefeated regular season, they fell short of this achievement. A loss in the Big Ten Championship Game to the eventual national champion, Indiana Hoosiers, with a score of 13-10, was followed by a 24-14 defeat against the Miami Hurricanes in the Cotton Bowl. These outcomes marked the end of their season with a two-game losing streak, a disappointment keenly felt by the team.
Focus on Revenge
Star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, more than anyone, understands the weight of last season’s disappointments. From Miami Gardens, Smith regularly faces reminders of the Cotton Bowl loss. When asked by Bud Elliot on the “Cover 3 Podcast” about his focus for the Buckeyes’ redemption journey, Smith’s answer was clear.
Gotta be the hometown team, Miami. Gotta be.
Smith’s determination is palpable. Despite seven catches for 157 yards and a touchdown during that fateful game, including a significant 59-yard catch, the Buckeyes’ defeat included two costly interceptions from quarterback Julian Sayin. Those errors culminated in a 72-yard pick-six, undercutting their 9.5 point favored status and their hopes for back-to-back national championships.
Commitment to Ohio State
Jeremiah Smith has received enticing offers worth $10 million to leave, but he remains loyal to Ohio State. With confidence in his decision, Smith stated, “I always wanted to be at Ohio State. It would be dumb for me to leave Ohio State and go to another team when I have the best offensive line in the country, the best quarterback in the country, the best coaches in the country.”
While Smith is likely to be a leading prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft, his current focus firmly remains on his Ohio State journey. For now, the upcoming season is all about pursuing a championship and seeking redemption on the field.
