Clara Lyons Embraces Role Change
Sophomore Clara Lyons faced a position change this season. Geneva’s first-year softball coach, Kaleigh O’Brien, suggested Lyons try shortstop, despite her never having played there before. Lyons welcomed the challenge, acknowledging the difficulty of playing shortstop compared to her usual position as a catcher. She stated, “Props to the people that can play shortstop. I make a lot of mistakes and I’m trying my best. As I continue, I’m getting a little more comfortable.”
Coach’s Perspective
Coach O’Brien, who played first base for Wisconsin-Whitewater, understands the challenges of adapting to new positions. She recognizes Lyons’ ability to refocus after mistakes. O’Brien noted Lyons’ resilience, saying, “She has the ability to just bounce back and refocus.” Lyons’ willingness to tackle new challenges was evident as she previously tried playing in Geneva’s girls flag football team, showcasing her strong arm as the quarterback.
Season Overview
Last season, Lyons impressed as a freshman, achieving a .453 batting average with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs. This year, Geneva entered spring with a 9-19 record, aiming to improve in the Class 3A Belvidere Regional against Freeport. Lyons continues to lead the team offensively, batting .446 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs. Her involvement in the Dennison Silver Hawks travel organization since age 8 has honed her skills.
Adjustments and Team Strategy
Lyons experienced changes in how pitchers approached her this season. Despite increased walks and strikeouts, she stated, “Sometimes, teams are pitching me a little differently but we have some really great pitchers in the DuKane Conference.” Lyons understands the importance of strategic batting, with Coach O’Brien noting, “If they throw to her, she’s gonna try to hit it 400 feet, but in some situations, she’s learning a walk is as good as a hit.”
