The launch of LeBron James’ Philadelphia 76ers jersey has created a major buzz in the sports world. According to Adam Wells of Bleacher Report, Fanatics announced that it is “the best-selling jersey ever for any player within the first 48 hours of their announcement.” The jersey’s success is significant since it surpassed sales of the popular Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani’s merchandise.

In an unusual display of support, a man from the Philadelphia area already had a version of the jersey even before they officially went on sale. His method was unconventional; he sunburned the jersey design into his skin.

‘Philly Toughness’

As detailed by Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the fan, Joey Abel, is a devoted Sixers supporter living in New York. He has experienced the triumph of the New York Knicks’ recent championship but remained loyal to his team. On a trip to the beach with his family, Abel learned about LeBron’s signing. He decided to express his excitement in a way characteristic of Philadelphians—by enduring a bit more discomfort.

He used his nephews’ blue zinc sunscreen stick, instructing his sister to write “James” and “23” on his back in the fashion of a jersey. Surprisingly, he opted not to apply sunscreen elsewhere. “I didn’t even know [how I thought of it],” Abel told Coffey. “I was just like, ‘How can I get a LeBron James jersey as fast as possible?’ And for some reason, that’s where my mind went.”

Pictures provided to the outlet showed that the plan worked. “About an hour later, his family rubbed the sunscreen off to find a semi-permanent LeBron James jersey seared into his back,” Coffey wrote.

For context, Coffey noted that the weather was slightly cloudy and in the high 70s, which he described as “perfect for a roast.” However, wearing sunscreen is advised even on cloudy days.

Internet users shared images of Abel’s sunburned creation. Despite his family’s embarrassment and the discomfort he experienced, Abel is proud of his demonstration. “It does hurt, but I did it, right?” he remarked. “I’m going to have to keep it. I don’t really want it to fade as fast. Philly toughness, like LeBron’s going to learn.”
