Nicole Curtis Faces Legal Action Over Detroit Property

Nicole Curtis, once the face of ‘Rehab Addict’ on HGTV, is embroiled in another legal issue. The City of Detroit has filed a lawsuit against her and her company, Detroit Renovations LLC. The city claims Curtis failed to maintain and renovate a dilapidated house, which remains a public nuisance.

In 2021, Curtis took ownership of this 1921 American foursquare-style home following a legal battle with the Detroit Land Bank Authority. Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny had earlier declared the property a danger, mandating repairs. Despite receiving multiple code violations and a court ruling, Curtis has not adhered to these requirements, the city alleges.

Curtis has not yet responded to inquiries for comment. Issues with the property include damaged exterior features and an unrepaired roof and gutters. The city insists the house has not met safety standards and continues to decline.

Curtis gained recognition for restoring historical homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on Detroit and Minneapolis. Her expertise emphasized preserving their original design and historical integrity.

Recently, Curtis faced further controversy when a video revealed her using a racial slur during the filming of ‘Rehab Addict.’ This incident led to HGTV canceling her show and removing it from all platforms. The footage went public on the day her series was set to resume after a hiatus.

In the video, Curtis unintentionally uttered a racial epithet and admitted to the mistake, urging its deletion. This led to her termination from HGTV, citing the conflict with their values.

Following this, Curtis issued an apology, expressing regret and remorse. She later discussed the incident on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ where she addressed her use of such language. Despite attempting to explain, she faced criticism and scrutiny during the interview.
