Trump’s Conflict with Senate Republicans over Attorney General Nominee
President Donald Trump has expressed intense frustration toward certain Senate Republicans. He is at odds with the decisions surrounding his attorney general nominee, Todd Blanche. Notably, Trump accused Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, of obstructing Blanche’s nomination.
Cornyn, alongside Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina, has questioned the nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund. This fund and Trump’s audit immunity, which come from a settlement with the IRS, are points of contention. Blanche’s nomination is stalled because of these unresolved issues.
Trump used Truth Social to criticize Cornyn, alleging that the senator was supportive of the fund until Trump endorsed Ken Paxton for Senate against Cornyn’s preferences.
“John Cornyn never had a problem with the so-called ‘Fund,’ which will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down,” Trump commented.
Fox News Digital did not receive a response from Cornyn regarding Trump’s remarks.
Republican Concerns and Accusations
Tillis and Cornyn are seeking explicit proposals from the Department of Justice to redefine the anti-weaponization fund. They also call for clarity on Trump’s audit immunity. They claim higher-ups in the administration are delaying discussions with Blanche.
On Thursday, Cornyn expressed uncertainty about the situation. “There’s been some more complications,” he said, suggesting that White House officials might be involved.
Trump stands firm on the fund, arguing it is meant for government abuse victims. He stated many share his concern and believes that Blanche should be approved as U.S. Attorney General.
Nomination at a Standstill
While discussions continued with Blanche, Trump considered withdrawing the nomination. Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley postponed the confirmation hearing indefinitely.
There is speculation that Trump might hold the nomination until Cornyn and Tillis leave office, but future Senate support remains uncertain.
Beyond Cornyn and Tillis, Senators Lisa Murkowski from Alaska and John Curtis from Utah remain undecided about supporting Blanche. Given the general Democratic opposition, this resistance could impact Blanche’s chances.
