Recent research highlights the significant role human-induced climate change plays in fueling extreme fire weather in Southern Europe. Scientists at World Weather Attribution have linked climate change to an increased likelihood of the dry and hot conditions that led to the recent devastating wildfires in Spain and France. Their rapid analysis indicates that the probability of such conditions in Spain has increased 20-fold due to human activity, while France’s likelihood has doubled.
Over the past 26 years, the warming climate has tripled the occurrence of severe fire risk conditions in Spain and raised the risk by 40% in France. The studies focused on weather variables that lead to fire-prone environments, including air temperature, drought conditions, humidity, and wind patterns. Friederike Otto, a climate scientist from Imperial College London, notes the substantial changes in Spain’s fire weather, attributing much of the increase to these altered conditions.
Spain is experiencing its hottest summer to date, driven by January’s heavy rains followed by a severe drought. This weather cycle has fueled the wildfires, along with the issue of land abandonment, which left vegetation unmanaged and dry. In France, the Bordeaux region’s dense pine forests also contribute to fire severity.
Although World Weather Attribution’s study hasn’t undergone peer review, the methods employed are well-established and likely to be published in peer-reviewed journals later. Otto’s team assessed the impact of burning coal, oil, and gas on fire risk by evaluating fire weather severity in both historical and current climates, revealing that human activities significantly intensify fire conditions.
Syracuse University fire scientist Jacob Bendix, uninvolved with the research, supports the findings. He concurs that climate change, acknowledged in the scientific community for decades, exacerbates extreme heat and drought, which increases fire frequency and severity.
Another study in Scientific Reports by Raúl Cordero from the University of Groningen reports a notable rise in extreme fire weather days in Southern Europe—up from about 10 annually in previous decades to roughly 25 now. Additionally, these days are 50% more intense than they were from 1981 to 2010.
Despite advances in fire suppression since the 1980s, climate change has nullified these gains, says Cordero. The intensity of climate-driven conditions hinders fire prevention efforts, regardless of resources. University of California Merced’s John Abatzaglou emphasizes that climate change effects are present concerns, not solely future issues.
Otto concludes that to mitigate these worsening conditions, reducing fossil fuel usage is essential. Temperature increases, and consequently, severe fire weather will persist if fossil fuel combustion continues.
