Seattle Mayor Defends Decision to Replace Police Chief Amid Festival Shooting Investigation

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson publicly defended her decision on Friday to replace the city’s police chief, describing it as the “right decision at the right time.” The announcement follows a recent gang-related shooting at a food festival near the Space Needle, leaving two bystanders dead. Although a 15-year-old was arrested and charged with assault, his weapon was not linked to the fatalities.

The leadership shift sparked criticism over delayed communication on the shootout details from the previous police chief, Shon Barnes. Barnes, Seattle’s second Black police chief, was recognized for his efforts in increasing officer recruitment and reducing downtown crime. Several community and business groups, alongside City Council members, have criticized Wilson’s decision to replace Barnes.

During a Friday news conference, Wilson, accompanied by interim chief Andre Sayles, acknowledged Barnes’ contributions. She emphasized having insights into the department’s operations beyond external criticism. Said Wilson, “There were multiple factors. The events of Sunday played into it.”

Andre Sayles announced plans to boost police presence at festivals throughout the summer. He expressed confidence in nearing the apprehension of additional suspects involved in the shooting.

The violent incident occurred at the “Bite of Seattle” festival, an event that attracts numerous vendors and performers. The shootout claimed three lives, including a suspect, and left four injured. A 2-year-old child was among those wounded.
