Baker Mayfield Feels Undervalued by Buccaneers
Baker Mayfield, a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, expresses feeling disrespected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite his desire for a contract extension, he plans to complete the final season of his three-year, $100 million contract.
Mayfield said, “I’ve been open about my feelings for Tampa, our family’s home. We love raising our kids here. I wanted a deal done, set a deadline, and then focused on football. I don’t know if they thought I’d accept some of their offers.”
Baker Mayfield joined the Buccaneers after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft by Cleveland. He revitalized his career in Tampa Bay, stepping in after Tom Brady in 2023. He led the team to consecutive NFC South titles and made the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons.
“It’s disappointing to feel a bit disrespected,” Mayfield stated. “It’s not about feeling sorry, but understanding my value compared to other quarterbacks. I consider myself a franchise quarterback. It’s been acknowledged publicly here, and not securing a new deal is disappointing.”
Mayfield addressed his teammates, ensuring the contract situation doesn’t become a distraction. “Money shouldn’t motivate football,” he explained. “It’s about helping the team win. Betting on myself keeps me motivated. I’m not alone; the team and staff are with me, fighting for our goal: playing in February.”
If Mayfield replicates his 2024 performances, with 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and a 71.4% completion rate, Tampa Bay may need to offer more. His current range suggests an average contract between $50-55 million.
Offensive lineman Ben Bredeson vouched for Mayfield’s consistency. “Baker hasn’t changed through anything going on,” Bredeson remarked. “He’s still our quarterback, leader, and friend. It’s about football for him, and he remains consistent and dedicated, on and off the field.”
Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea faces contract issues as well. Entering the final year of his deal, he’s missed practice due to a back injury. Mayfield commented, “It’s about winning now. I hope Vita resolves his back issues and secures his deal. He’s the anchor of our defense and deserves it.”
