Rising El Nino Intensifies Global Climate Concerns

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A growing El Nino is already setting records for its early intensity and is expected to exacerbate extreme weather globally. United Nations officials recently highlighted the urgent need for preparedness as this phenomenon advances.
Scientists from Columbia University reported that a critical area of the Pacific Ocean, used to gauge El Nino’s strength, has reached unprecedented warmth and intensity for 15 consecutive weeks since its inception. The El Nino, characterized by a natural warming of Pacific waters near the equator, disrupts weather patterns worldwide. It isn’t expected to peak for several months and is anticipated to persist through spring 2027.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a U.N. agency, warned of potential severe heat, drought, and heavy rainfall that might extend into next year. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgency, stating, “Two months ago, I warned that El Nino was arriving on our doorstep. Now it is inside the house and turning up the heat.” He cited recent extreme weather events such as unprecedented heat domes, wildfires in Europe, and significant heat-related casualties.
Guterres warned that the current situation is merely “a warm-up act,” with El Nino likely to intensify the existing climate emergency. “We are in uncharted territory,” he stated, highlighting the dire state of the climate crisis.
Most computer forecast models suggest this El Nino could surpass previous records for intensity, although there is no certainty. Scientists stress that while El Nino’s direct effects might take time to manifest, they will eventually combine with long-term global warming fueled by coal, oil, and gas combustion. Columbia University climate expert Jeffrey Shaman noted that the region is experiencing its warmest July on record, serving as an indicator of changes to come, including potentially unprecedented global summer temperatures.
The forthcoming strong El Nino is expected to alter rainfall patterns sharply, resulting in drastic weather extremes. The WMO predicts a heightened risk of droughts and wildfires in regions such as Indonesia, India, southern and eastern Australia, parts of South America, and Africa’s southern areas. In contrast, regions like the U.S. and areas in southern Europe might experience increased rainfall.
The WMO’s Secretary-General, Celeste Saulo, stated that this developing El Nino, set against a backdrop of unprecedented ocean heat and rising global temperatures, presents a crucial opportunity for governments to anticipate and mitigate risks.
While El Nino and climate change are distinct, their combined effects are especially dangerous. Guterres criticized the lack of attention to the climate crisis in favor of conflicts in Ukraine and other regions. He accused the fossil fuel industry and certain countries of misleading the public about the severity of climate issues.
Guterres called on the U.N. to take a more active role in public engagement to urge governments to recognize climate change as an existential threat. He stressed the immense heat produced by fossil fuel combustion, much of which is absorbed by oceans and later released into the atmosphere during El Nino events.
Though this El Nino will eventually conclude, the heat it releases will linger, contributing to future temperature increases. Guterres advocated for improved early and cooling systems to manage extreme heat. He emphasized the necessity for safer work environments, particularly in industries like garment manufacturing, which employs many under challenging conditions without adequate heat protections.
Finally, he insisted that the global community must cease “fueling the crisis.” Further reliance on coal, oil, and gas will lead to an increasingly unstable future.
