Off-Field Issues Overshadow North Carolina’s Football Preparations

Before North Carolina initiated its football season under Bill Belichick, off-field concerns dominated discussions. As fall camp progresses before the ex-NFL coach’s second year, off-field issues again take center stage.

University of North Carolina (UNC) officials confirmed that general manager Michael Lombardi is on leave amid an investigation. The investigation, officially announced after discussions earlier, still lacks detailed information. During a news conference, Bill Belichick avoided specifying how Lombardi’s absence might impact the team, stating, “We’re working through some things.”

We’re at a particular time of the year now where there are certain things that are in play, and certain things that are in play that will happen later in the calendar year. So we’re taking it day to day and work through the things that are on the table right now.

UNC issued a statement noting that concerns over allegations led to the personnel action against Lombardi. The Office of University Counsel is conducting the investigation. The inquiry is a human resources matter with no definite timeline for a conclusion. Athletic director Steve Newmark emphasizes the need for a careful process, stating, “The university counsel’s office is going to have this go as quickly as possible, but they need to do it the right way.”

Newmark abstained from commenting on whether others in the athletic department are included in the probe or if another College Sports Commission investigation is ongoing. UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts, after initially opting not to discuss Lombardi’s situation, expressed frustration with the attention on this issue, “I’m disappointed that we’re talking about this. We should be focusing on our student-athletes and on their success.”

Meanwhile, the Tar Heels experienced a 4-8 season during Belichick’s first year. Lombardi has enlisted attorney Tom Mars, who stated that Lombardi is unaware of the investigation’s nature but is eager to clear his name. “Michael is fully cooperating with UNC and expects the investigation will be swift, thorough, and fair,” Mars said. He requests patience to allow the process to unfold without premature conclusions.
