Debate Over SAVE America Act Intensifies with NJ Voter Registration Errors

Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey argues that President Donald Trump’s SAVE America Act is not justified, even after the discovery of approximately 6,600 noncitizens being mistakenly eligible to vote in the state. He insists that the issue is unrelated to federal voter ID requirements.

Nothing in the SAVE Act would have prevented a clerical error like we’ve seen in Texas and Oregon and New Jersey, Booker said. We’ve got to protect our voting systems.

Last week, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that the state had removed about 6,600 noncitizens from its voter rolls. This removal followed an identification of serious software errors in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System, which mistakenly made these individuals eligible to vote in the 2024 presidential election.

The revelation has increased pressure on Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE Act, a piece of legislation that some GOP members oppose, while Democrats are overwhelmingly against it.

[The SAVE Act] would stop millions of Americans from voting, Booker commented on Trump’s legislative efforts.

Booker noted that Sherrill and New Jersey officials are investigating the causes behind the eligibility error and have taken steps to remove noncitizens from voter rolls.

We take this very seriously in New Jersey, Booker stated. People are stepping up.

While Democratic leaders acknowledge the voter-roll failure as a significant issue, they maintain that systemic fraud fears are not warranted.

Booker opposes the SAVE Act, labeling it as a substantial voter suppression bill. Democrats argue the act’s requirement for all voters to provide in-person citizenship documentation could prevent millions from voting.

Despite his stance on the SAVE Act, Booker believes states should handle voting regulations, requiring proof of citizenship at the state level, even in federal elections. He cites the Constitution, which entrusts states with managing voting processes and prosecuting law violations.

No national standard exists for identifying or reporting voter system errors, complicating efforts to assess the scale of these problems. Republicans advocating for the SAVE Act claim the legislation would help address and uncover such issues.

We’re going to handle the problems in New Jersey, but I hate how it’s being weaponized by some people to advance schemes that actually would hurt Americans, Booker remarked regarding the SAVE Act.
